1920s–1930s – Art Deco – Czech Malachite Glass Perfume Atomiser

Origin:

Produced in the Bohemian glassmaking tradition of Czechoslovakia, this perfume atomiser exemplifies the Art Deco period's love of opulent materials and sensuous figuration. The bottle is formed in malachite glass — a distinctive opaque pressed glass with swirling dark and bright green marbling — a specialty of Bohemian houses such as Heinrich Hoffmann and Curt Schlevogt, whose celebrated "Ingrid" line featured exactly this type of relief nude figural work. The body is sculpted in high relief with intertwined female nudes supporting a canopy of floral and grape garland motifs, a design closely associated with Czech luxury glass exports of the 1920s and 1930s. Unmarked, in the style of the great Bohemian Art Deco malachite glass ateliers; the atomiser hardware is a later replacement, as is common with pieces of this age.

Condition:

  • Glass body in good vintage condition — no chips or cracks noted
  • Malachite marbling vivid and well-defined
  • Atomiser pump mechanism intact; gold-tone hardware bright and clean, consistent with a quality replacement fitting
  • Black braided cord and tassel bulb present and complete
  • Minor age-related wear consistent with a vintage piece

Design Notes:

Czech malachite glass occupies a rare intersection of fine art, decorative glass, and wearable luxury — produced for a brief golden window in the interwar period, it was exported across Europe and America as the height of boudoir elegance. The figural nude-and-garland motif seen here is among the most sought-after in the genre, evoking both classical sculpture and the liberated spirit of the Art Deco moment.
