1930s–1950s – Art Deco – Bohemian Pressed Crystal Vase

Origin:

A striking example of Bohemian Art Deco pressed and frosted crystal glasswork, this vase is closely associated with the celebrated Desna glassworks of Czechoslovakia and the renowned "Ingrid Collection" designed by Heinrich Schlevogt — a line widely praised as a Lalique-inspired achievement in Central European glass. The ovoid barrel body is defined by a bold all-over grid relief pattern in clear crystal, punctuated by a frosted satin-finished draped female figure in high relief — a hallmark motif of the Bacchantes-style Bohemian vases produced from the late 1930s onward. The scalloped tabbed rim and the interplay of matte and clear surfaces are consistent with pressed glass production techniques used by Desna and related Bohemian ateliers of the period. Unmarked, in the style of Desna Crystal / Schlevogt Ingrid Collection, Bohemia, Czechoslovakia.

Condition:

  • Very good vintage condition overall
  • No chips, cracks, or repairs observed
  • Minor surface dulling consistent with age and storage — glass retains excellent clarity and figure definition
  • Some light scuffs to base possible; none affecting display

Design Notes:

The Ingrid line and its Desna-produced relatives occupy a fascinating position in Art Deco glass history — democratizing the visual language of Lalique's frosted figural work through precision mold-pressed production, making it accessible without sacrificing aesthetic impact. This vase carries that spirit beautifully: the grid lattice grounds the composition with geometric rigour while the satin nude figure introduces warmth and movement, a tension that feels entirely of its era.
