Early 20th Century – Viennese Bentwood Cane-Top Occasional Table
Origin:
A beautifully resolved occasional table in the Viennese bentwood tradition pioneered by Michael Thonet — the master craftsman whose steam-bending technique revolutionised European furniture in the 19th century. Crafted from steam-bent beech, the piece speaks the unmistakable language of Vienna bentwood: fluid, curving lines achieved without a single carved joint.
The round top is finished in hand-woven cane, its warm honeyed tone set against the rich, aged patina of the frame. Beneath, four gracefully splayed bentwood legs sweep outward from a central knot — a sculptural quadripod base that is as much engineering as it is ornament. Tables of this form featured in the production programmes of the great Austrian bentwood houses (Gebrüder Thonet, J. & J. Kohn) from the late 1800s into the early 20th century.

Design Notes:
This is bentwood at its most elegant — the splayed legs fan down to the central knot like the ribs of an umbrella, while the caned top keeps the whole piece light and airy. More than a century on, the form still feels modern, a reminder of why Vienna bentwood remains one of the most collected design traditions in the world.
