1970s – Chinese Export Lacquerware – Jewelry Box with Cork-Carved Diorama

Origin:

A decorative jewelry box in the Chinese export lacquerware tradition, most likely produced in the Fuzhou, Fujian region of China during the 1970s — the height of the cork-carving (软木雕) export craft industry. The lid features a recessed black-lacquered cartouche panel inlaid with a delicately hand-carved cork diorama depicting pagodas, palm trees, and a pair of swans rendered in mother-of-pearl, a subject composition characteristic of Fuzhou export craft of this period. The exterior is finished in a deep red lacquer with an embedded rose motif pattern, framed by a wavy cartouche border. Unmarked; in the style of Fuzhou export lacquerware produced for the international gift and souvenir trade during the 1970s–early 1980s.

Condition:

  • Good vintage condition overall — displays well
  • Minor wear to lacquer exterior consistent with age and use
  • Small area of lacquer loss/flaking at one corner of the lid cartouche
  • Interior red brocade lining intact and clean; ring rolls present and functional
  • Brass hardware (clasp and hinges) shows light patina — all functional
  • Cork diorama scene intact with no losses to the carved elements or mother-of-pearl inlay

Design Notes:

The cork-carving tradition of Fuzhou is a centuries-old art form elevated into a thriving export craft industry in the mid-twentieth century, with pieces like this one finding their way into homes across Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East as cherished souvenirs and gifts. The combination of the lustrous red lacquer exterior with its bold rose motif and the intricate miniature landscape of the cork diorama gives this box a richly layered visual character that transcends its modest size. A small object with genuine handcraft content and period charm.
