1930s – Czech Art Deco – Lapis Blue Malachite Glass Perfume Bottle with Figural Stopper

Origin:

Produced in the Gablonz (Jablonec nad Nisou) glass-making region of Bohemia, Czechoslovakia, circa 1930s, this opulent perfume bottle belongs to the celebrated tradition of Czech malachite and lapis lazuli pressed glass that made Gablonz factories famous across Europe and America during the Art Deco period. The deeply saturated cobalt-blue opaque glass with characteristic darker veining replicates the appearance of natural lapis lazuli stone — a signature technique associated with the workshops of Heinrich Hoffmann and Curt Schlevogt, whose "Ingrid" line produced some of the most collectible figural glass of the era. Every surface is covered in high-relief moulded decoration — putti figures, grape clusters, roses, and foliage on the body; a lavish bouquet of flowers and fruit on the oversized fan-shaped stopper — all rendered with the crisp, sculptural quality typical of Gablonz factory production. Unmarked, in the style of Hoffmann or Schlevogt, consistent with authenticated examples in auction records and the Suntory Museum of Art collection.

Condition:

  • Excellent vintage condition throughout
  • Original stopper present and intact — a significant rarity, as stoppers are frequently lost or damaged
  • No chips, cracks, or repairs visible across all surfaces
  • Relief decoration sharp and well-defined with no wear to the moulded detail
  • Age-appropriate surface character consistent with 90+ years of age

  • Era: circa 1930s
  • Unmarked (typical for Gablonz production of this period)

  • Display alongside perfume bottle or vintage glass collections
  • A statement object for a dressing table, shelf, or curio cabinet

Design Notes:

Czech malachite glass of this type occupies a fascinating space between fine art, industrial craft, and decorative luxury — mass-produced in Gablonz factories yet individually distinctive in their depth of colour and sculptural relief. The lapis blue colourway is among the most sought-after in the collector market, and the survival of the original floral stopper — itself as ornate as any sculpture — elevates this piece well above common examples. A rare and complete survivor from one of the most glamorous chapters in European glass history.
