1920s–1930s – Art Deco – Czech Bohemian Malachite Glass Perfume Bottle

Origin:

Produced in Czechoslovakia (Bohemia) during the height of the Art Deco period, this opaque emerald-green malachite glass scent bottle is a superb example of the pressed figural glassware for which the Bohemian glass industry became internationally renowned. The globular body is covered in richly detailed bas-relief depicting cherubs or putti among grapevines and foliage — a Bacchanalian motif popular in the luxury vanity wares of the era — while the oversized stopper takes the form of an elaborate floral bouquet, lending the piece an almost sculptural presence. The satin matte finish, depth of colour, and crispness of the moulding are consistent with Czechoslovakian production of the 1920s–1930s, in the manner of makers such as Curt Schlevogt. Unmarked, and attributed to the Bohemian Czech malachite glass tradition of the Art Deco period.

Condition:

  • Very good vintage condition overall
  • Stopper present and functional — fits the neck securely
  • No chips or cracks observed in either bottle or stopper
  • Minor surface wear consistent with age
  • Natural variation in the matte green finish — inherent to the material

Design Notes:

Malachite glass — engineered to replicate the look of the precious stone — was one of the great prestige materials of the Art Deco vanity market, produced almost exclusively in Bohemia for export to Europe and America. The combination of the Bacchanalian figural body and the exuberant floral stopper makes this bottle unusually decorative even by the standards of the genre — it reads as a small piece of sculpture as much as a functional perfume vessel.
